International Mendelssohn Festival 2024 – Konzert „Melodie und Grazie“
- Classical Music
MELODY AND GRACE
Mozart created one of his most beautiful musical gifts for his friends with his Clarinet Quintet KV 581. In every bar, the quintet confirms the "unheard-of charm of Mozart's melody and his grace", as Richard Strauss called it. The friendship and mutual admiration between Johannes Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann, and Joseph Joachim repeatedly provided artistic inspiration. Clara Schumann wrote her three romances for violin and piano for Joachim and herself. Robert Schumann, Brahms, and Albert Dietrich surprised Joachim with a sonata; from the life motto of the then still staunch bachelor, "free but lonely," the three friends based the four movements of the violin sonata on the notes fae as a motif. Brahms composed the Scherzo, which will be heard in today's concert. Another focus of the evening are works for two pianos, which are in no way inferior to the melodic richness of the others: Robert Schumann's Andante and Variations op. 46 and Mozart's Concerto for two pianos, string quartet and bass KV 365.
