International Mendelssohn Festival 2024 Konzert "Canzonetta"
  • Classical Music

In this concert evening, the old and the new are combined, the familiar and the unknown, when the E-flat major trio of the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn meets the rather unknown romantic sounds of the Hamburg-born Ferdinand David. The canzonetta from Mendelssohn's E-flat major trio gives the evening its title; freshly in love, he composed this magical chamber music movement, like a song without words, light and yet overshadowed by sadness, as if he had an inkling of how his infatuation with Betty would end. The symphony for four cellists by the Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen, composed in 2020, is very young. The two cellists Arto Noras and Frans Helmerson, who already took part in the premiere of the work at the Naantali Music Festival, are guests here in Hamburg. The sounds of Mieczyslaw Weinberg may still be undiscovered by many Europeans; his Aria op. 9 can be heard in the sacred setting of St. Johannis Church in Harvestehude. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach brings the piece to a close; born 300 years ago, he still stands in the shadow of his great father. He composed his Symphony No. 1 in Hamburg, where he was music director of the five main churches.
