Harbour Front Literaturfestival

Literature and Culture at the Port of Hamburg

Against the backdrop of harbour cranes and overseas containers, the Harbour Front Literature Festival will once again bring together great German and international literature, creating a wholesale market of knowledge, news and cultural exchange.

+++ The Habour Front Literary Festival will unfortunately be cancelled in 2024. Please contact the organiser if you have any questions. +++

Everyone knows the attraction of the port of Hamburg. The idea of Harbour Front is to bring this large market of knowledge and news into direct connection with great German and international literature. Well over 20,000 visitors each year prove that this idea is well received. The Harbour Front Literature Festival was launched in 2008 and held for the first time in September 2009. Since then, more than 220,000 visitors have come to 75 venues in the harbor. Over 1,000 participants - including more than 900 literary artists, 120 presenters and more than 100 actors - from a total of 40 countries have turned the Port of Hamburg into a meeting place for literature.

The largest festival in northern Germany combines extraordinary venues with great authors. To emphasize the festival's connection to the port, from now on even more readings will take place on the water. Many outstanding literary representatives as well as young talents will be there when, from September 14 to October 28, it will once again be "Cast off and full speed ahead!" for the Festival of Books in the Hamburg harbor area.
