Between red walls and high stucco columns, the club has been letting it rip since 1968: The Gruenspan in the Große Freiheit in Hamburg.
Initially disreputable as a drug den where the audience chilled on mattresses and listened to psychedelic sounds from the turntable, the Gruenspan experienced a comeback as a hip house club in the late 1980s. It wasn't until the 2000s that the "Span," as it used to be called and is now called again, was able to make a name for itself again as an outstanding mid-sized live establishment. Today, fans of alternative rock, including some types of metal, as well as hip-hop heads, soul, reggae and pop fans get their money's worth here.
