From Poppenbüttel to the Duvenstedter Brook

the green sides of the city

Quiet field paths and unspoiled nature on the way from Poppenbüttel to Duvenstedter Brook.

The tour starts at Poppenbüttel train station. From Altona, Blankenese, Hamburg's main train station or many other stops in the city, you can easily reach the starting point by train. After just a few kilometers, you leave the buildings behind and enter the greenery. On the way through the Heidkoppel moor and along the Bredenbek pond, you will get in the mood for being out in unspoiled nature. Over quiet field paths and again and again through beautiful forest areas you will reach the Hansdorfer Brook behind Rehagen, which is directly followed by the Duvenstedter Brook. You will explore both thoroughly over the next few kilometers.

The Duvenstedter Brook lies directly north of the Wohldorfer Wald. Together with this, the Hansdorfer Brook and the Ammersbek lowland, it forms a huge, contiguous forest area. If you are lucky, you might meet one of the very special wild inhabitants of this nature reserve or hear its loud and haunting calls during the rutting season. In fact, a very large population of deer lives here. There are special viewing blinds through which you can observe the animals without disturbing them. Cranes and gray herons also breed on the moorland.

After you have explored the extensive forest area, you slowly make your way back to Poppenbüttel. But the discoveries are not over yet, because you drive through the middle of the Rodenbek spring valley with its countless flowing waters. It's not until the last few kilometers of the tour that you're back in city traffic, but here, too, on side roads that are as quiet as possible. After just under 39 kilometers, you'll arrive back at the train station in Poppenbüttel and can board the train directly. If you still haven't had enough, you can of course simply ride to the nearby Alster and follow the river into downtown Hamburg.

Medium-difficulty bike tour. Good basic condition required. The tour may include passages with loose ground that are difficult to ride.

The 84-hectare nature reserve Rodenbeker Quellental is located in the north of Hamburg. With old trees, idyllic paths and numerous benches to the right and left along the way, this area is not only Hamburg's oldest region, but was also predominantly formed by the last ice age.
