Beach hopping on the Elbe

rediscover Hamburg

This tour gives you that vacation feeling, because you're going to the beach - and not just one, but Hamburg's most beautiful Elbe beaches.

The tour starts at the Landungsbrücken, which is easy to reach by public transport and where you can rent a bike at the StadtRAD station.

From the Landungsbrücken you cycle directly along the Elbe downstream, so past the fish market, the dockland and the museum harbor. Shortly after the museum harbor you already reach the first beach, the Elbstrand Övelgönne. When taking a break here, it is particularly worthwhile to visit the beach bar "Strandperle".

Afterwards, a small climb leads up to the shore slope. Once at the top, you have a fantastic view of the Elbe and the container terminals of the port. Here you ride along above the Elbe before a small descent back down to the shore. The Elbe shore path leads directly along the water and also past two small beaches to Blankenese.

Here an impressive beach awaits, which stretches for several kilometers to Wittenbergen. The route runs directly along the beach and you can take breaks at the individual sections as the mood takes you. As with all beaches on the Elbe, the only thing to do here is sunbathe, because swimming in the Elbe is not allowed. The current is too strong and there are too many ships passing by.

At the Falkensteiner Ufer in Wittenbergen, you then leave the Elbe and cycle up the bank to the Marienhöhe forest park. Here you meet Veloroute 1, which is followed through Blankenese and Othmarschen to Altona. From here, Veloroute 13 leads back to the Landungsbrücken.

The floating dock - called the "Landungsbrücken" (landing stages) – is 700 metres long. Harbour tours and the HADAG steamers to Finkenwerder, Oevelgönne and Blankenese leave from this water "station". Impressive luxury cruisers also dock here from time to time.

The Elbe beach near Övelgönne is a pretty hot tip in summer. When the temperatures rise and the sun burns, nothing is more refreshing than a jump into the cool water.
