Alsterlauf

Bicycle Tour

Cycle along the Alster into the City.

If you want to cycle from the city into the green Alstertal valley and get to know the green side of Hamburg along the way, this is the tour for you. Starting from the outskirts of the city, this tour leads along a natural valley area into the city center to Hamburg's Rathausmarkt. Today, the Alster Valley is continuously developed for recreation on land and on water. You will find wet meadows and floodplain forests all the way to the promenade at the Alsterarkaden in the city center. The route starts directly at the Alsterwanderweg at the Kulturkreis Torhaus Wellingsbüttel. If you would like to stock up on refreshments before the approximately two-hour tour, it is best to start the route at the Alstertaler shopping center. The shopping center houses a total of 240 stores and offers you everything from clothing, accessories and jewelry to gastronomy.

Starting from the Wellingsbüttel gatehouse, you then head to the world's largest park cemetery in Ohlsdorf. A short detour on foot or by bike through the park is definitely recommended. The next stop on the tour is the Alsterdorfer Markt, every Friday the weekly market takes place there from 10 am to 6 pm. In addition, there are various gastronomic offers for refreshment. Strengthened and refreshed, the Eppendorfer Moor attracts as a green oasis and species-rich nature reserve, there are many animal species to discover. The route then continues through the greenery of Hayns Park and Alster Park to the Lombardsbrücke bridge and the transition between the Outer and Inner Alster lakes. Crossing the Lombardsbrücke, you reach the Jungfernstieg, teeming with stores, sights and restaurants. The end of the tour is the City Hall, from there you can either explore a little more of the Hamburg city center, go shopping or have a coffee. Who has left the strength for the return trip on the bike, you can easily take one of the trains or buses that depart from the Rathausmarkt.

Hayns Park lies on the bank of the Alster between the districts of Eppendorf and Winterhude. The park is named after the Hamburg mayor Max Theodor Hayn who used to have his country residence here. Visitors enjoy the picturesque green area with its many lawn areas for sunbathing and playing. A special feature of the park is the children's paddling pool developed by Otto Linne.
