Schloss Bothmer A baroque castle in northern Germany
In the outermost corner of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern near Klütz lies the largest preserved baroque castle in the state - Bothmer Castle. Built according to Dutch and English models, it is still one of the most magnificent castles in the Hamburg metropolitan region.
Idyllically situated in an extensive castle complex, Bothmer Castle was built in 1726 in Klützer Winkel as the ancestral seat of the Imperial Count Bothmer. A unique interplay of landscape planning and Baroque architecture was realised on this estate. The Festonallee is the path that leads you to Bothmer Castle and is one of the most beautiful avenues in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With every step a visitor takes to approach Bothmer Castle, the panorama opens up a little further. Only when you arrive in the Ehrenhof you can see the full splendour of the castle.
A piece of England in the Hamburg metropolitan region
Bothmer Castle looks like an English country house. And this is no coincidence, because the Imperial Count Bothmer, who lived for some time in Downing Street in London, brought a piece of England with him to Mecklenburg. Bothmer Castle remained in the hands of the family for a long time. The financial situation and the succession, however, ensured that the castle finally fell into disrepair and was placed under forced administration. After the Second World War, the Bothmers were expropriated and the castle passed to the Red Army, which used it as a lanzaret and old people's home. Today, Bothmer Castle belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which has undergone extensive restoration.
Experience the fascination in the castle museum
In the main building there is a castle museum, which gives you exciting insights into the history of the house and its inhabitants. The exhibition does not only show the history of the builder of Bothmer Castle but also tells about the politics in the Baroque period and the relations to the English royal house.
The eastern side wing now serves as a restaurant and café. Even after more than 300 years, Bothmer Castle attracts numerous visitors and quite a few filmmakers. The unique façade not only served as a backdrop in several films, but is still a popular place to get married today. Every year, the Schlossgarten with its park is one of the venues of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.
