Nature reserves Raakmoor & Hummelsbütteler Moore Recreation area in the city
Forests, lakes, moors and ditches - the Raakmoor and Hummelsbüttel moors nature reserves are full of idyllic nature.
An approximately 6-kilometer circular trail leads through the small Raakmoor nature reserve in the north of Hamburg. If that's not enough, you can take a detour to the old Hummelsbütteler Müllberg and enjoy the view over the city. From the viewing platform behind the artificially dammed lake, you have a sweeping view over the wet moor.
On romantic paths along the watercourses and over footbridges through the moorland, you can observe how nature is reclaiming its habitat. What was once raised bog and then used for agriculture is now gradually returning to its original state. The vegetation is changing from coniferous and deciduous forest back to swamp forest. Typical plants such as the bog lily, heather and peat moss are re-establishing themselves. Toads hop into the pools, adders meander through the grass and dragonflies and rare butterflies buzz above the water.
Other remnants of the once extensive moorland landscape are protected in the nearby Hummelsbüttel moors nature reserve. Unlike the Raakmoor, however, there is no network of footpaths here.
