Nature reserve Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe, Rhee and Holzhafen

Three nature reserves nestle in the floodplain landscape of the Norderelbe at Veddel: The Upper Tidal Elbe, Rhee and Holzhafen wetlands. Rare animal and plant species have adapted to the constant change between high and low tide.

With a bit of luck, you may spot cormorants or shoveler ducks on a walk. Numerous migratory birds use the Holzhafen as a resting place. Part of the Elbe island of Kaltehof with its industrial monument is also part of this nature reserve. The Rhee, which is criss-crossed by ditches, is now cut off from the tidal influence.

Bunthäuser Spitze

The Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe nature reserve extends over several areas up to Bunthäuser Spitze near Wilhelmsburg. You can find out more about the special features of the valuable tidal habitats at the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Center on the headland. After a short walk through extensive reed zones, you will reach the Bunthaus beacon at the end of Bunthäuser Spitze. At a height of 6.95 meters, it is the smallest lighthouse in Hamburg, but from the top you can enjoy a beautiful view of the headland framed by the Norderelbe and Süderelbe rivers.
