Hamburgs prettiest beach

Between Cranz and Blankenese lies the beautiful little Elbe island of Schweinesand. Today it forms the headland on the eastern side of the Neßsand nature reserve. Numerous endangered animal species are at home here. In addition to lesser black-backed gulls and black terns, seals and white-tailed eagles can also be found here. The beach may be accessed, but otherwise Schweinesand belongs entirely to nature. The Elbe island can only be reached by boat.

The island of Neßsand belongs to the Mühlenberger Loch, a diverse mosaic of varied habitats on the Elbe. Tides and storm surges shaped and still shape the landscape, which is one of the most important bird migration areas on the Lower Elbe.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Blankenese & Elbe outskirts

The former fishing and seamen's village of Blankenese is situated directly on the Elbe. It is the perfect starting point for hopping on a sailing boat or on the Elbe ferry, or for taking long walks along the shore. Another highlight is a visit to the Treppenviertel (German for staircase quartier) with a spectacular view of the lighthouse and the Falkenstein shore.
