St. Pauli Nachtmarkt

Shopping and relaxing have never been so close together! With its late opening times, the St. Pauli night market on Spielbudenplatz has not only adapted to the usual local opening times, but also to the general shopping behavior of our time.

The St. Pauli night market is no ordinary weekly market. It is right in the heart of the Reeperbahn on Spielbudenplatz and, with its late opening hours (4 p.m. to 11 p.m.), has not only adapted to the usual local opening times, but also to the general shopping behavior of our time. The directly attached beer garden with its live music stage also makes our weekly market an "after work" meeting place and offers residents and visitors an unforgettable shopping and enjoyment experience. The normal local supply of fresh food from the region is excellently combined with a relaxed end to the day.

Note: During the Reeperbahn Festival or the Santa Pauli Christmas Market, the St. Pauli Night Market moves to the Reeperbahn, at the Boutique Bizarre level.

Steinway Piano Competition

Finding and promoting exceptional talent is Steinway & Sons’ passion. The Steinway Piano Competition, offers children and young people under the age of 17 a platform that enjoys an international reputation and opens many doors for young pianists since 1937.



A record number of 220 young talents has been reached this year – they have all registered for the Steinway Piano Playing Competition and will present their programmes in a pre-selection at Steinway locations throughout Germany. After viewing the video recordings made there, a jury will decide which participants will be invited to the final at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg.

There, the most promising young pianists will perform in the Great Hall in front of the jury, who will then award the prizes, which will be presented on stage at the grand finale.

Steve Reich

At the time when he established minimal music, he was in his late twenties. Now, he is 87 years old: Steve Reich, according to the New York Times »one of the greatest living composers« and according to the New Yorker the »most original musical thinker of our time«. The ensemble unitedberlin led by Austrian conductor and composer Christoph Breidler presents no less than three of his works, which emerged between 2007 and 2019 – for one of them, there is a film which plays with colours and shapes.
For his five-movement piece »Radio Rewrite«, Reich was inspired by two songs by the rock band Radiohead: from »Everything in Its Right Place« and »Jigsaw Falling into Place«, he made avant-garde music and wrote a new piece »for an ensemble of musicians who play non-rock instruments« with harmonious and melodic fragments. His colourful »Double Sextet« follows, for which Reich received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2009. It can be performed with two identical sextets or with six musicians who play along with their own recording.

Inspired by Gerhard Richter’s famous strip paintings, the old master of minimal music returns in »Reich/Richter« to play with small motif cells. You can experience this piece in combination with the film »Moving Picture« by video artist Corinna Belz, who created a whirring world of shapes and colours in moving image from photos of Richter’s cropped pictures.

What a love-struck score: »Roméo et Juliette, dramatic symphony, with chorus, vocal solos and prologue as choral recitative, after Shakespeare’s tragedy, dedicated to Nicolo Paganini« – what a wealth of lyrical tones, what enchanting moments, even bizarre, irrational ones, what lush harmonies and ravishing melodic arcs! Its creator Hector Berlioz himself was in an exceptional state: »What a passionate life I led during this whole time! With what vigour I swam in this vast sea of poetry, caressed by the exuberant breeze of fantasy, under the warm rays of Shakespeare’s sun of love, and trusting in my strength to reach the wonderful island where the temple of pure art rises.« With »Roméo et Juliette«, Berlioz had – after a long search – finally created his symphonic theatre of dreams.
