The Port of Hamburg and its birthday have a long tradition. The birth of their port has been celebrated by the people of Hamburg since 07 May 1189, when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa issued the people of Hamburg with a charter granting duty-free passage for ships on the Elbe from the city to the North Sea. For a little over a quarter of a century, HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY has been celebrated in public. It is a popular attraction for visitors from near and far.
The solemn opening of HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY will celebrated this year by the main pastor. Clergymen from different nations are also part of the service, which has a different motto each year. The ceremonial opening will be followed by the trational entry parade and then numerous attractions - on water as well as on land.
