This year's lecture series of the Northeast Institute addresses a highly topical issue: Russia's war against Ukraine reminds us that the question of Russia's place in European history and present remains open.

Six experts from the fields of history and political science search for historical traces, analyze current developments and outline possible future scenarios for a troubled neighborhood. The imperial history of the Tsarist Empire and the Soviet Union, the domestic and foreign policy dynamics since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the current development of the country are examined. Finally, the question is asked as to what Russia's future role in world politics might be.
