based on the novel by Nino Haratischwili / Directed by Jette Steckel

Sometimes, memories make it impossible to live in the present. It is too painful, constantly reproaching yourself for being left behind. In 2019, three women meet up in Brussels for a retrospective exhibition of work by their late friend, a renowned photographer. Her photographs help them share their memories from life back in Tbilisi at the end of the 1980s: Four young, self-assured women living out their special friendship and getting high on their first loves. It is a dance on a volcano. They celebrate the reprieve granted to them by their ignorance about the future, about what the first years of Georgian independence will bring: Gang warfare, Kalashnikovs, tanks and a state that can no longer guarantee the security of its citizens. Nonetheless, there were people who decided to remain human and who defended this decision against all opposition. You always have a choice, but perhaps not always the strength to make the right one.

Director in residence, Jette Steckel follows “The eighth life” (For Brilka) and “The Cat and the General” with this production of “The Fading Light” completing the trilogy of these stage adaptations of great novels by Nino Haratischwili. And she once again asks a question about taking responsibility for your actions in a world in which all logic seems to be dispensable.
