Christmas concert! At the Laeiszhalle! Where else? Brandenburg an der Havel is really beautifully situated, but – for understandable reasons – cannot boast a comparable concert hall. That’s why the Symphoniker Hamburg is bringing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 to Hamburg, with a brilliant ensemble led by Adrian Iliescu on the violin. Bach is known to have travelled to Hamburg in 1720 – a short trip around the world for the composer from Köthen, but also a very painful one: his first wife Maria Barbara had died suddenly just a few weeks earlier while he was in Carlsbad. The first of Bach’s »Concerts avec plusieurs instruments« from March 1721 may therefore be particularly poignant for the audience.
