Who was Helmut Schmidt? What role did his time as a soldier in World War Two play in his financial, economic and European policies as Chancellor and as a minister, and why did he travel so much to the USA and China?

The exhibition “Schmidt! Living democracy” gives insights into a century of contemporary German and international history and shines a spotlight on controversial issues of the day, particularly those of the 1970s and 1980s, that remain highly topical. Very much in keeping with Schmidt’s approach, we also invite our guests to debate and ask questions on the future of democracy in Germany, Europe and the world.
