Vinyl records are back –
In May, record fair for a good cause in Scheeßel
Last year, the Scheeßel Record Donation Network launched a highly successful appeal for record donations for a good cause. Over 100 record owners from the surrounding area, as well as from Hamburg and Bremen, donated over 8,000 LPs and more than 3,000 singles. Record fans, led by initiators Luffy Lüdemann and Bobby Meyer from the KIS (Children's Information Centre) and the Scheeßel Local History Association, have since sorted the records by genre.
"Now it's time to evaluate the records," reports Luffy Lüdemann. "I've already been able to find some more valuable records with the help of the internet. Records are back in fashion!" In 2020, vinyl sales exceeded those of CDs for the first time. The hunt for vintage records is particularly popular among music fans. The Scheeßel residents are right on trend.
"CDs have disappeared from the music departments of department stores and electronics stores," says KIS colleague Detlev Kaldinski. Instead, there are increasingly more records on offer. "Vinyl records are also significantly more durable." Experts estimate the lifespan of CDs at 30-50 years. Kaldinski has dug his records out of the basement and invested in a good Thorens record player. "For a long time, I believed in the dynamics of the compact disc, but now I can once again enjoy the warm sound of my records, like a fine instrument in my living room."
In addition to rock classics, Kaldinski also enjoys classical music and jazz, especially cello, lute, and piano. "We'll have a lot of that on offer at our sales starting May 23," promises Kaldinski. Entire classical and jazz collections have been donated, for example by a former ballet dancer from Hamburg who found it difficult to part with her treasures. The record donation network therefore offers not only entertainment music, but also serious music, Kaldinski assures. The many different donors generate a broad selection. Bobby Meyer: "We have something for everyone!"
Bobby and Luffy, who have already covered numerous bands in over 30 events in their Talking 'bout series, are the main specialists in popular music. Beatles aficionado Bobby, for example, is delighted that several versions of the Beatles' Red, Blue, and White albums will be on offer. From Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin to Neue Deutsche Welle—no one goes empty-handed, Meyer is pleased. "German artists like Udo Lindenberg, Klaus Lage, and others fill several moving boxes," adds DJ Bobby.
The records will be dropped off from Friday, May 23rd, to Saturday, May 31st, 2025, at the Scheeßel-based Holst car dealership on Vareler Weg, which will specifically dedicate part of its sales space to the event. In addition to KIS and the local history association, the Lions, the LEAs, the Sparkasse, the Beekscheepers, and the Scheeßel trade association are also supporting the record donation network. From April 11th to the end of May, the Kunstgewerbehaus am Meyerhof will also host the exhibition "My Favorite Cover," which will open with a vernissage by Bobby and Luffy, "Talking 'bout Record Covers."
