SameSame N5 – "The Unnoticed"

An exhibition by Elizaveta Ostapenko and Gerald Chors

April 24–27, 2025 | SameSame Gallery, Hamburg-Eidelstedt

In the fifth exhibition of SameSame Gallery, two artistic approaches meet: Polaroids by Gerald Chors and paintings by Elizaveta Ostapenko. Both artists focus on the unnoticed and overlooked aspects of the urban environment, making transformation and impermanence visible through their work.

Under the title "The Unnoticed", Ostapenko and Chors present works that engage with the everyday surroundings – yet with a sharpened eye for what is often overlooked. Their artistic processes often begin with photography and evolve through various media to create new layers of meaning. What unites them is their work with fragments and their search for visual traces in the changing of time.

Gerald Chors uses analogue Polaroid photography, often with expired film, to document fleeting urban scenarios. In his images, he preserves moments of disappearance while simultaneously reflecting on the medium of photography itself. His works evolve into prints and installative objects, where image, memory, and materiality are intertwined.

Elizaveta Ostapenko combines painting, printmaking, and sculpture in her works. She observes the structures of everyday life with a fine sensitivity for spatial compositions and transforms architectural fragments into poetic reconstructions. Her works address the tension between movement and stillness, between reality and abstraction.

Despite the differences in their expressions, the works of both artists reveal numerous parallels in detail: a multi-step creative process, an interdisciplinary approach to image carriers, and an engagement with time, space, and perception. Their works enter into a quiet, yet compelling dialogue with each other – and with the audience.

SameSame Gallery – A Place for Exchange and Discovery

Since late 2021, the SameSame Gallery in the Hamburg district of Eidelstedt has offered a temporary space for contemporary art beyond established art paths. With its unique concept, the gallery brings together two artistic positions that meet through a common idea, technique, or theme – not in a spirit of competition, but as a complement. The fifth edition also marks the launch of a companion Art-Zine that documents the series.

The SameSame Gallery was founded by René Scheer to create a space for creative development and dialogue. The exhibition is supported by the Forum Eidelstedt and the Eimsbüttel district from the Eidelstedt Discretionary Fund – for which we are grateful.
