The multi-purpose vessel NEUWERK is an operational vessel of the Elbe-North Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority. Visitors can learn about the crew's duties on board, including pollution control, buoy placement, icebreaking, emergency towing, firefighting, and maritime police duties. The Elbe-North Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority is one of 17 waterways and shipping authorities nationwide and is responsible for approximately 400 km of waterways and 32,000 km² of the North Sea's marine area. It oversees the maintenance, development, and operation of the Elbe, the Eider, and a significant portion of the North Sea. As a river police and construction supervisory authority, the authority ensures that the waterways are navigable and that the federally owned shipping facilities and the waterways are safe. As a maritime police authority, we ensure that traffic or other uses of the waterway do not pose a danger to people or the environment.
