Open Ship GESINE VON PAPENBURG (friesische Schmack)
- Other
The Gesine von Papenburg is the only Frisian schmack in operation today. As a successor to the tjalks, which were only partially seaworthy due to their design, a new type of ship emerged at the beginning of the 18th century with the increase in maritime trade along the European coasts: the "schmack." To increase seaworthiness compared to the tjalks, the hull of a schmack was built more full and provided with a very strong positive sheave. The draft and freeboard were increased, and ballast increased stability. The rigging also had to be adapted to the new sailing area. The crew on board provides insight into the ship's history.
