Open Ship Fischereischutzboot MEERKATZE

Welcome aboard! The crew of the "Meerkatze" demonstrates how fishery protection works in everyday life. Whether it's minimum fish size, fishing gear, or shipping documents – the inspectors from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) board fishing vessels and check compliance with EU regulations. Visitors can learn about the tasks of fishery protection on board during open ship hours. The crew answers questions and presents working materials such as measuring devices and cold-weather protective suits. The main task of the BLE protection boats is to monitor national and international fisheries regulations in Germany's Exclusive Economic Zone and in European maritime areas. In addition, the protection boats are deployed worldwide for international agreements – all year round, even in extreme weather conditions. The inspectors board fishing vessels of different nations and inspect fishing techniques, equipment, and the fish caught. By conducting inspections at sea, the federal protection boats make an important contribution to the conservation of fish stocks and thus to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The goal is to ensure the sustainability of food production and contribute to the preservation of ecosystems by 2030. The BLE works closely with other federal and coastal state law enforcement agencies: It is part of the Coast Guard Coordination Network and a partner in the Cuxhaven Maritime Security Center (MSZ).
