Nature Film Wednesday / European Wildlife Film Awards: Becoming Butterfly (Language: English)
- Movie, Cinema, TV
A butterfly caterpillar is born on a lemon tree. It is supposed to grow there until it turns into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly. But a storm destroys the predetermined pattern: the caterpillar falls and is carried away by the rain and wind.
The caterpillar has only about three days to return to its tree, the only place where it can complete its mutation into a butterfly. It embarks on a journey against time, travelling through several miniature ecosystems: the flower bed, the lawn, the sandy avenue and the forest. Along the way, she encounters fireflies, the Lasius niger ant and the praying mantis.
Through this caterpillar's journey of survival, we discover the incredible richness of the micro-worlds, where one small step for man is a lifelong expedition for a tiny insect.

About the European Wildlife Film Awards (EWFA)
The EWFA is the first nature film competition to exclusively honour documentaries about the European animal and plant world. Presented by Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung, there are a total of six award categories. 245 films were submitted for the first competition in 2025. A jury of experts from the fields of nature conservation, media, science and culture selected the winners in the categories of wildlife, biodiversity, nature conservation and storytelling. Cinema-goers also had the opportunity to rate the films. They voted for the best short film and decide on the Audience Award, which will be presented for the first time in 2026.
