International Mendelssohn Festival
- Classical Music
Two worlds of sound that intertwine in a surprising way: This programme traces the encounters between Jewish musical tradition and classical chamber music. Maurice Ravel’s »Kaddish«, Ernst Bloch’s heartfelt »Prayer« and Sergei Prokofiev’s overture on Hebrew themes take up klezmer motifs – serious, playful or meditative. Gustav Mahler and Alma Mahler open the evening with late Romantic introspection, before original Klezmer sounds form the unifying centrepiece. Finally, in Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, emotion and virtuosity merge – and show how music transcends origins.
