For at least 4 centuries, the sexes formed a characteristic building block in Dithmarschen's economic and political development as a republic.
Landlords had little influence on the events in the fortified coastal area. Until 1559 the landscape Dithmarschen remained self-governing. The old Ditmar families gave their relatives protection against economic hardship, help with fire, water and court.
