833th HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY
- Celebrations
The port of Hamburg and his birthday have a long tradition. Since Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa issued a charter to the people of Hamburg on 7th May 1189, which granted the exemption from duty for ships on the Elbe from the city to the North Sea, the people of Hamburg celebrate the birth of their harbor. Nonetheless, the 'Hafengeburtstag' has been publicly celebrated only a bit longer than a quarter of a century. Since then the Harbour Birthday grows from time to time and is a popular attraction for visitors from near and far.
