Gustavo Santaolalla

He is one of the great masters of cinematic sounds of our time: Argentinian Gustavo Santaolalla has turned films such as »The Motorcyle Diaries«, »Nanga Parbat« and »Brokeback Mountain« into complete works of art with his music. He is also a successful producer and inventive string instrumentalist. He comes to the Elbphilharmonie with a multi-faceted programme that traces his life’s work.

He pioneered the fusion of rock and folk in his homeland back in the sixties. He fled from the military junta to the USA, where he turned from punk musician to producer and solo artist. Santaolalla discovered Latin superstars such as Juanes, worked with Cuban rappers Orishas as well as with the string players from the Kronos Quartet, and helped electro tango to triumph with the Bajofondo Tango Club. His career is characterised by several Grammy nominations and a Grammy for the production of a song by the band Café Tacuba. And last but not least, he brought the bright, chirping sound of the small Bolivian plucked instrument ronroco to the stage worldwide.

This instrument has also given his current programme its title: in »Ronroco«, the 73-year-old Santaolalla celebrates an instrumental cross-section of his career with a quintet – from pieces from his solo albums to excerpts from the most beautiful soundtracks for the big screen.
