by Christian Kracht / Directed by Stefan Pucher

So, with a Zimmer frame, mother’s little helpers and a few bottles of whiskey all packed, the narrator embarks on a bizarre road trip with his eccentric mother. Travelling in a taxi, the odd couple drives across Switzerland, always running away from loneliness and away from a life poisoned by money. There’s a plastic bag on the back seat containing an obscene of money – 600,000 Francs in banknotes, which the mother has withdrawn from her private bank in Zurich in person. From the neglected flat on Lake Zurich to the chalet in Gstaad we quickly enter the shallows of a personal and collective past.

Always driven by a burning desire to try to get rid of the profits of dirty dealings in the weapons industry as quickly as possible, through squandering and giving things away. One last shared journey, bringing mother and son together in a way that life itself never managed to do. We find ourselves entering the dark corners of family history, from the Springer offices in Hamburg to their Nazi grandfather’s villa in Sylt – or to Beyond Africa?

The human being, a creature behind a splintering façade of luxury – what is real and what is fiction? A highly amusing play with biographical influences and an enchanting parody. After making the shortlist for the German Book Prize, the novel has been adapted for the stage by pop director Stefan Pucher.

"Eurotrash is breathtakingly different: Christian Kracht mixes Nazis, money, family and coming to terms with the past – and he outsmarts everyone as he does so.” ZEIT
