The Shona and IMBA galleries are showing paintings by WERNER THIELE and sculptures by HANNO EDELMANN in the exhibition - ERLEBEN - ERFAHREN - ERINNERN
Hanno Edelmann is an artist who tells stories with his sculptures and paintings. His works capture the fateful moods of people. Influenced by an experience during his march as a prisoner of war to Siberia, he turns against the zeitgeist of post-war abstraction: on the way, the troop of German soldiers was crammed into a barrack for days, without bread and without hope. At the request of a fellow prisoner, he mixed colors from charcoal and crushed brick and covered the white-painted walls with his figures. “You gave us a piece of hope with your paintings,” said an older soldier.
After the war and being a prisoner of war in Siberia, Werner Thiele fulfilled his professional dream of becoming a painter, woodcutter and etcher without any academic training - alongside earning a living as a precision mechanic. After his return, he had the opportunity to see works by the artists' group “Die Brücke” at the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Pechstein or Heckel, among others) or, until 1951, at the Galerie der Jugend, where woodcuts played an important role and the term “autodidact” was an honor. “Everyone belongs to us who unadulteratedly reproduces what urges him to create”, according to the manifesto of the Brückemaler from 1906.
