When you think of the trumpet, »calm« and »quiet« are probably the last words that come to mind. But Lake Geneva-born jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz manages to do just that: he carefully moulds the delicate sound of his instrument and contrasts it with funk, hip-hop and drum and bass beats. For this perfect symbiosis, Truffaz received the prestigious Swiss Grand Prix last year – an honour he shares with singer-songwriter Sophie Hunger, who invited Truffaz to her »Reflektor« festival at the Elbphilharmonie and where he now presents his programme »Rollin’ & Clap!«, which reinterprets the soundtracks of classic films with a jazz twist.
Whether it’s the legendary theme from the film »Elevator to the Scaffold« by Miles Davis, music by Ennio Morricone or Nino Rota – on two albums, Erik Truffaz lends the catchy tunes of film history his typical sound and ventures a »sonic all-round renewal«, according to JazzEcho magazine.
Sophie Hunger has enjoyed a long artistic friendship with Erik Truffaz. Just one year after the release of her debut album, Truffaz invited her to join his quartet on an international tour in 2007. Further appearances, including at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and joint songs quickly followed. In addition to the large musical overlap, the two are united above all by their uncompromising sincerity: »I’m looking for originality and honesty in music,« explains Truffaz, and with Sophie Hunger, he’s running into an open door. It’s only logical that he should appear in her »Reflektor« festival at the Elbphilharmonie.
