Das Sprechwerk is a stage for premieres and experiments in the free performing arts. With its 160 square meter stage, it is one of the largest and most beautiful off-theaters in Hamburg. The spectrum ranges from drama to dance theater, children's theater, performance, cabaret and improv theater. The program is supplemented by sophisticated in-house productions in the fields of drama and dance.
The genesis
The theater was founded in 2004 by dramaturge Andreas Lübbers. That same year, actress and cultural manager Konstanze Ullmer joined him. Together they built up the theater as a non-profit association, which Ullmer still runs today. Since 2008, the Hamburger Sprechwerk has received institutional funding as a private theater from the Hamburg Department of Culture, which covers part of the costs incurred. Situated in a backyard in Hamburg-Borgfelde, the former warehouse offers space for 150 spectators in a room with "industrial charm".
The program of the Hamburger Sprechwerk
The program is primarily made up of guest performances by independent professional artists, who often show their premieres and first performances here. The spectrum ranges from drama to dance theater, children's theater, musical, cabaret, improv theater and magic. The program is supplemented by ambitious in-house productions of plays, which are produced once or twice a year under the label "Wortgefechte". These plays are not covered by institutional funding, but each require separate funding through applications to authorities and foundations. In addition, the Sprechwerk offers Hamburg dance and drama schools as well as secondary schools the opportunity to show their work under professional conditions.
