Colorful, eye-catching and expressive: Hamburg Street Art

If you like street art and graffiti, Hamburg is the place to be. Every walk can become an art stroll thanks to colorfully painted facades and large murals. With the Affenfaust Gallery and the Millerntor Gallery there are two well-known "official" places to go in the city, but beyond that almost every district has its own highlights. A few tips we give you here already on the way.

Meeting place for fans of modern urban art

Anyone interested in contemporary art should take a look around the Affenfaust Gallery in Altona. Part of the concept of the gallery were from the beginning also projects that take place in public space such as installations and special wall designs that stand out in the cityscape.

"Komm in die Gänge"

The former residential quarters on Valentingskamp in Hamburg's Neustadt district have developed into an arts and cultural center since the early 2000s. Thanks to the efforts of the residents and users of the store spaces, the neighborhood was preserved and redeveloped for the public instead of being demolished. The motto for this was "Come to the Gänge." Walking through the Gängeviertel, many works of art can be found on the buildings.

The longest curated artwork in Northern Germany

Art and culture can be found everywhere in Hamburg - even on the construction fences! Around the construction site of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, the artist collective "Mentalgassi" has set up the longest curated artwork in northern Germany in collaboration with Affenfaust Galerie: The unique exhibition #UNUEBERSEEBAR tells the stories of 33 people from HafenCity. As a cooperation partner of the action, the Affenfaust Galerie shows even more current art.

A visit to the sea bear in the backyard

"FischersNetz"

To see this famous hamburger, visitors have to come to the backyard of Lippmannstraße. This can be easily combined with a stroll through the Schanzen. A company based here commissioned the large mural a few years ago and has since enjoyed the sight of the painting, which is a beautiful symbol of life in Hamburg: its maritime roots are still present and are appreciated and loved by the residents. But that doesn't stop Hamburgers from also venturing into new technologies - just like the fisherman who changed the net.

Art festival for a good cause

Millerntor Gallery

Soccer is not the only game played at the famous Millerntor Stadium. Every summer, the stadium hosts the Millerntor Gallery art, culture and music festival. Participating artists paint the walls and ceilings of the stadium's main and south stands, sculptures and photography are exhibited, and a wide-ranging program of concerts, lectures and discussions is organized. Part of the proceeds from the festival will go to the organization Viva Con Agua, which provides people around the world with access to clean drinking water.

Strong women from Hamburg’s history

FrauenFreiluftGalerie

It is the first stop in Germany for the open-air gallery "FrauenFreiluftGalerie Hamburg" on the subject of women's work in the port. The paintings are dedicated to real women's power in all its facets.

The model for this mural comes from Japan

The big wave

This motif should look familiar to many people passing by: Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai created the Great Wave in the mid-19th century as a print from a woodblock. Prints of this print are exhibited in famous art museums around the world. Hamburg has its own version of it, on a house wall in Barnerstraße in Ottensen. Even though there are no dolphins in Hamburg, the maritime motif fits the Hanseatic city incredibly well.

Harburg's house walls as a gallery

Walls Can Dance

The right motif makes even sturdy walls dance. This is the motto of the organizers of Walls Can Dance. In Harburg, in Hamburg's south, is the open-air gallery that they have curated and that is also set to grow. Some of the motifs are very close to reality, others show comic-like little scenes. The motifs and the festival's program around their creation in 2020 and 2021 are intended to create a connection between two parts of the city that are right next to each other, but separated by car and train lines.

A tiger as an eye-catcher on the clinic wall

Amur jumps through Altona

Is it just one tiger or are there three? That's a matter of interpretation. The impressive mural, which has been emblazoned on a wall on Holstestraße in Altona-Nord since 2015, was created on the occasion of the Knotenpunkt art festival. Since the wall belongs to the Endo Clinic, artist Björn Holzweg incorporated their specialty bones, joints and hips into his work and shows the tiger not only as usual with fur, but once with flesh and muscles and once as a skeleton.
