See lots of Hamburg - off the well-trodden paths
Do you think you've already seen everything in Hamburg? Then think again! We show you everything you can discover off the beaten track for € 48.00. Idyllic, crazy, colourful, but always Hanseatic! The city shows its best side and reveals one or the other facet that you've never seen.
Coffee and Cake at the Laundrette – ca. € 5.00
By far the most unusual café in Hamburg can be found in Ottensen: Laundrette. The café has a total of ten washing machines and is converted into a bar in the evening. What is special about the concept, however, is not only the fusion of café, bar and laundrette, but also the sustainable basic idea that Laundrette represents: whether green electricity, milk from regional farmers or energy-saving washing machines - the focus here is on sustainability. So while you're enjoying an Italian "Espresso Al Banco" (a fast standing espresso at the counter) and have your laundry cleaned in an energy-efficient way, you can consider which drink you'd like to have afterwards: In the Laundrette, guests can have their drinks individually mixed together in the evening (e.g. gin with a soft drink of their choice), in addition to tried and tested classics. There is also free Wlan, what more could you ask for? // Waschsalon: Ottenser Hauptstraße 56, 22765 Hamburg
Hühnerhof MOTTE
Usually, you get fresh eggs from happy chickens on farms far away from the city - or in Ottensen. For over 35 years, the Hühnerhof Motte has been here - a nature area in the middle of the city. In addition to taking a few freshly laid eggs for a small donation, you can also buy honey from the farm's own beekeeping business in the Eisliebe ice cream parlour (Bei der Reitbahn 2), in the Hier & Jetzt bookstore (Erzbergerstraße 10) and in the office of the Stadtteilzentrum MOTTE e.V. (Eulenstraße 43). However, you have to have a lucky day because the eggs and honey are very popular with Ottensen locals. But the primary idea of observing chicken and bees in their natural environments is always worth a visit. // Hühnerhof MOTTE: Eulenstraße 43, 22765 Hamburg
A closer look at the Gängeviertel
We continue to the Gängeviertel, close to the Gänsemarkt - a social project that has developed into an art object. Since 2009, the historic part in the Altstadt and Neustadt are being vehemently protected from deterioration and the associated demolition. This has been done with the aid of art, culture and social projects. Between the half-timbered houses in mazes of connected rear couryards, you will find regular exhibits, concerts, parties and readings. In addition, the Gängeviertel is also part of the free Street Art Tour due to the graffitis by well-known artists that can be found here. For all sorts of reasons, a stroll through the historic paths is always worthwhile because there is always something to see, hear and discover. // Gängeviertel: Valentinskamp 40, 20355 Hamburg
Hanseatische Materialverwaltung
Hamburg is a media city where many different television and film projects are realised. But many people do not know that most props land in the trash - which not only costs Hamburg a great deal of money, but is detrimental to the environment. The Hanseatische Materialverwaltung thus specialises in collecting the leftovers from film projects, events and trade fairs. Subsequently, anyone can take advantage of the rich finds from the theatre, film and photo worlds. The best thing is that stage sets or trade fair booths can not only be bought, but also rented. This is especially practical for cultural institutions, public schools, universities, artists and private clubs. // Hanseatische Materialverwaltung: Stockmeyerstraße 41, 20457 Hamburg
Alternative Hamburg Street Art Tour – on donation basis
Most people who hear the term 'Street Art' associate it with graffiti. The fact is, however, that all art forms in public spaces can be defined as so-called Street Art, including tiles, stickers, cut-outs and more, which are artistically dramatised. Primarily on walls and house facades but also on bus stops, lanterns, trash bins, traffic signs or junction boxes. For more information on this subject and its background, you can take a donation-based Street Art Tour, which takes you through the highly diverse cultural scene in Hamburg.
A tour through St. Pauli – ca. € 20.00
With good reason, the Reeperbahn has been designated as the world's 'most sinful' mile. The amusement and red light district in St. Pauli is known for prostitution; however, only men are allowed to take a deeper look into the milieu. Many places are taboo for women. But those who are still interested in the development and background of the Reeperbahn can take part in a so-called 'hurentour' (whore tour). During the tour, participants gain insights into prostitution earlier and today, get a behind-the-scenes look at the situation and openly speak about taboos. For those who find this too raunchy but still want to know more about the area, any number of classic St. Pauli Kiez walking-tours are available.
