Whether it's the sheep-surf festival, the autumn market, the adventure exhibition "jahreszeitHAMBURG" or the explorer circuit - the Hamburg Environmental Centre at Gut Karlshöhe is your green oasis in the city - with great leisure activities for young and old. Here you can find out how "simply living well" can be successful within the framework of natural resources.
Month after month, events for a sustainable good life lure you to the old manor house. The approximately 1,000 events per year deal with topics such as climate and energy, nature and animals, welfare, consumer behaviour, crafts and DIY. While groups of children and families explore the 9-hectare site with its forest, sheep pastures, farmer's garden and fruit meadow, companies hold climate-friendly meetings in our modernly equipped rooms and spend a day in nature with their employees.
Several times a year, young and old meet around the Hofplatz for a festival or ecological market and enjoy a sustainable way of life. The Hobenköök with its regional and seasonal delicacies is responsible for the culinary offerings. You will feel at home in this special place. In the middle of the countryside - in the middle of the city.
The history of Hamburg's largest estate
Gut Karlshöhe was originally a farm. In 1986, the association responsible for an "Umweltzentrum Karlshöhe" was founded in order to create a unique location for environmental educational events by renovating the manor house and its grounds.
Hamburger Umweltzentrum - A Good for Young and Old
Today, Gut Karlshöhe is a place of learning and experience that teaches children and adults about the sustainable use of natural resources. Here you can smell, hear, taste and understand sustainable lifestyles. Energy-efficient environmental technologies are even used in buildings. The many stations of the estate can be explored in a playful way on the DiscovererRundweg. Here energy-saving heating in the energy house, water treatment by a plant-based sewage treatment plant or heat storage by a multifunctional storage tank are explained. The tour also leads along the sheep meadow, the farmer's garden or the litter meadow. It is particularly beautiful on the meadow when the apple trees blossom!
More knowledge is available in the exhibition "jahreszeitHAMBURG". In around 50 stations, children can playfully discover the connections between nature, energy and climate protection. After an extensive tour, fresh energy can be filled up in the Kleinhuis Garden Bistro right next door.
Events - Learning about nature, technology and climate protection in Hamburg child's play
In regular events, adults and children learn more about nature and sustainability, during upcycling, in the research workshop or during guided tours of the estate. Be inspired!
