Hamburg has many different facets, so it is not surprising that the Reeperbahn, the harbour and the Speicherstadt in particular are often used as film sets for cinema and TV productions. Hamburg is popular with national and international filmmakers because it offers so many different motifs from which a wide variety of stories can be told. We show you the 10 most famous film and TV locations!
1.In Dockland
The striking office building in Hamburg Altona with its view over the northern bank of the Elbe is perfect for filming. In the German-Danish production "I Am Here ", Kim Basinger desperately tries to get pregnant and does not shy away from criminal acts. Dockland remains true to its function in this gripping thriller, as Maria (Kim Basinger) has her workplace here.
2.On the Binnenalster
In "Bend It Like Beckham " there is more than one impression from Hamburg. Young Keira Knightley kicks her way through the women's football team at her high school with her school friend. The team's away match finally takes them to Hamburg, where the Steigenberger Hotel is not the only backdrop. A sightseeing tour through the city on the Elbe also takes them past the Rathausmarkt, the bunker in Feldstraße and across the Alster!
3.In the Elbphilharmonie concert hall
As Detective Chief Inspector Nick Schiller, Til Schweiger investigates prostitution and pimping in Tatort - Welcome to Hamburg. The escape of 16-year-old Romanian Tereza, played by Nicole Mercedes Müller, leads to a spectacular manhunt in Hamburg, which eventually takes her to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The girl hides there with serious injuries. The tormentor can finally be arrested there.
4.In the Speicherstadt
The "Pfefferkörner" (The Peppercorns) have been searching for clues as junior detectives in the Speicherstadt since 1999. Here, the sleuths investigate and convict environmental offenders and drug smugglers as a team, uncovering crimes both big and small. The children's and youth series conveys themes such as justice and friendship and addresses current issues such as cyberbullying. The Peppercorns' headquarters are located in the attic of an old warehouse.
5.At Rödingsmarkt
In the 2006 film comedy "7 Zwerge - Die Welt ist nicht genug" (7 Dwarfs - The Forest Is Not Enough) by and starring Otto Waalkes, the seven brave dwarfs leave "their" world to set off for the "other" world and find out the secret of Rumpelstiltskin, his name, in order to save Snow White's child. The "other" world turns out to be Hamburg for the audience and the Rödingsmarkt is the place where the dwarves appear for the first time outside their forest and are overwhelmed by some of the peculiarities of the modern world.
6.On the Reeperbahn
The TV series "Großstadtrevier" has been produced by Studio Hamburg in Hamburg since 1984 and already has more than 32 seasons under its belt. Filming locations can actually be found all over the Hanseatic city, but the Reeperbahn, the harbour around the Landungsbrücken and Hamburg's Michel are particularly recurring backdrops. The most famous police station in Hamburg, the Davidwache, is located in the centre of the Reeperbahn. It is also the great model for the 14th police station in "Großstadtrevier" and is in reality the centre of everything that happens in the neighbourhood.
7.At the Hotel Atlantic
The Hotel Atlantic on the Binnenalster is a real film magnet. Understandable given the location and backdrop. The Hotel Atlantic achieved world fame as the "white castle on the Alster" in James Bond 007 - "Tomorrow Never Dies". Pierce Brosnan, alias James Bond, climbs the famous globe of the Atlantic Kempinspki on a thrilling and breathtaking escape from a professional killer. By the way: Mönckebergstraße and Hamburg Airport were also used as backdrops in this film.
8.At the harbour police station
The ZDF TV series "Notruf Hafenkante" is probably the best-known police series set in Hamburg. Since 2007, the old harbour police station no. 2 aka "Polizeikommissariat 21" has served as the investigators' headquarters. The harbour police station is actually home to water police district 22, which is responsible for harbour security and dangerous goods. The "Notruf Hafenkante" team is out and about on land, at sea and in the air, often providing moments of suspense with dramatic rescue scenes.
9.On the Elbe beach in Wittenbergen
The German tragicomedy "Honig im Kopf" by and with Til Schweiger from 2014 is set in many scenes in and around Hamburg. The film is about 11-year-old Tilda (Emma Schweiger, Til Schweiger's daughter) and her grandfather Amadeus (Dieter Hallervorden), who is increasingly suffering from dementia. In a humorous but also tragic way, the viewer learns what it means for the family when a family member increasingly loses their memories. Probably one of the most beautiful scenes in the film takes place on Hamburg's Elbe beach near Wittenbergen.
10.In the Astrastube
Fatih Akin's "Soul Kitchen" is a true declaration of love to Hamburg and therefore also our highlight. The film is about the metaphorical home that is increasingly under threat in a new world. The central location is an old factory building in Wilhelmsburg, which also lends its name to the film as "Soul Kitchen". However, the film was also shot at various other locations in the Hanseatic city: the Astra Stube is located on the Sternbrücke in Hamburg-Altona. In the film, pub owner Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos) and his waitress Lucia (Anna Bederke) spend the night here, drinking vast quantities of schnapps until Lucia falls asleep at the bar and has to be carried home by Zinos.
