It is enthroned on a small island in Lake Schwerin: the majestic Schwerin Castle in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern of the same name. The castle in Schwerin is known as one of the most beautiful castles in Germany and is only a day trip away from Hamburg.

Ahrensburg Castle near Hamburg presents itself in white and comparatively simple. What may seem boring at first glance appears to be fascinating beauty on closer inspection. Festivals, weddings, music events and a museum make the castle shine as a landmark.

The Bergedorf Castle on the Billelauf is Hamburg's only surviving castle. Today it houses a museum. Around 1220 Count Albrecht von Orlamünde founded a moated castle in the dammed Bille, which fell to the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg in 1227.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Ludwigslust Castle was the residence of the Dukes in the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Today, the "Versailles of the North" is an incomparable cultural and historical monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and only a day trip away from Hamburg.

The moated castle near Winsen, which at first sight seems less like a castle, has been enchanting its visitors for over 700 years with a romantic backdrop directly by the Luhe.

The Wasserschloss in the Speicherstadt is actually not a real castle, but is often referred to as a castle because of its playful façade. With its location between two canals and its terraces, framed by venerable brick buildings, such a building cannot be found a second time in Hamburg's Speicherstadt.

Schloss Reinbek is located in the immediate vicinity of Hamburg, Lübeck and Lüneburg. Where the aristocracy once lived, today there are many events. Reinbek Castle and the inner courtyard are still filled with life and are among the sights of the metropolitan region that you should not miss.

Probably Hamburg's smallest castle, and probably the smallest in the world, is located in the north of the city directly on the course of the Alster. In reality, the castle known as the "Alsterschlösschen" is not a castle at all, but still worth seeing. The tower of the little Alster castle is reminiscent of the fairytale Rapunzel. And who knows, perhaps a young girl was once locked in the tower and freed by a dream prince.

In the furthest corner of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern near Klütz lies the largest preserved baroque castle in the state - Bothmer Castle. Built according to Dutch and English models, it is still one of the most magnificent castles in the Hamburg metropolitan region.

The Tralau mansion in Travenbrück (Schleswig-Holstein) is one of the most beautiful buildings in the region due to its outward appearance. The architectural style combines the Neo-Renaissance, Gothic and Art Nouveau styles with Historicism. For this reason it is often called a fairytale castle.
