Hamburg for early birds

The classic for all those who get up early (or stay up very late): Going to the fish market in the morning is simply part of the Hamburg experience. Here you can take in the hustle and bustle and the calls of the market criers while enjoying a really fresh fish sandwich and watching the sunrise at the harbour.

In this small patisserie called Die Kleine Konditorei, you can enjoy one of Hamburg's best Franzbrötchen (a sweet cinnamon bun which is typical for Hamburg) surrounded by the morning hustle and bustle of the city. It is even rumoured that the patisserie invented the Franzbrötchen. Many locals come here from early in the morning, so this is a real insider tip!

Miniatur Wunderland in the Speicherstadt historical warehouse district is often open from 7am. Here, the world wakes up around the clock and early risers are rewarded with the world's largest model railway layout. The Stintfang viewpoint at the Landungsbrücken piers offers an impressive view over the river Elbe and the harbour. You can watch the sunrise from there.

Hamburg's landmark, St Michael's Church, also called the Michel, is open daily from 9 am. Those who climb the stairs to the viewing platform are rewarded with a panoramic view over the city and the Elbe, which is particularly fascinating at this time of day.

When only the commuters are out and about in the morning and the day is just beginning, it is well worth taking a short bike ride along the Landungsbrücken towards the city centre. At this time of day, Hamburg harbour is usually quieter and you can enjoy the view of the water without the crowds. For bike hire, there are StadtRAD stations everywhere that offer bikes 24/7, which you can hire quickly and easily via an app.

The planetarium is located in the middle of one of Hamburg's green oases, the Stadtpark (city park), and invites you to take an exciting journey through the universe - even early in the morning. You can also observe the city park from above from the platform.

The tranquil atmosphere, accompanied by the sound of the water and the chirping of birds, provides the perfect backdrop for a morning stroll along the Inner Alster. Once around the Alster, it takes about 45 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace. The Alsterpark next door is the perfect place to enjoy the morning tranquillity with a view of the Hamburg skyline.

Hamburg's largest balcony is the 360-degree plaza of the Elbphilharmonie, which is open daily and can be visited free of charge. At a height of 37 metres, you have a great view of the port of Hamburg. It can get windy up there, so we recommend not forgetting your jacket. It's not so busy here on weekend mornings, so it's worth arriving at the main entrance shortly before opening hours.

The tranquillity of the morning hours offers the ideal opportunity to enjoy the impressive architecture and charm of the UNESCO Speicherstadt on a quiet stroll. Experience the historic ambience as the sun slowly rises over the red brick facades and bathes the canals in golden light. There are several coffee roasters here where you can treat yourself to a tasty (second) coffee after a stroll.
