Together with his wife Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare has reinterpreted his most famous work: Juliet awakes to find that her beloved Romeo is no longer alive. In contrast to the well-known ending, Juliet does not follow him to his death, but chooses to live. During her time with Romeo, she has come up against many limits and has had to bow to traditions, the will of her family and social conventions. She decides against her fate and takes her life into her own hands.

Juliet begins her new life with a change of scenery: she turns her back on Verona and sets off for Paris with her friend May, in search of herself and an adventure. In Paris, they meet François, who, like Juliet, is searching for who he is and what life has in store for him. A friendship develops between the two that could become something more. Juliet realises more and more that Romeo is not the perfect lover she had long thought him to be. He also had his weaknesses and was not perfect. With the separation from Romeo, Juliet increasingly detaches herself from her past and takes her fate into her own hands.

Shakespeare observes Juliet's path from the background and realises that the story is taking its course and that he must relinquish control over his characters. His wife Anne challenges him to rethink stereotypes and gender clichés and to break out of his narrative patterns.

While Juliet finds herself more and more in Paris, Romeo suddenly appears to continue the love story between him and Juliet. He was never dead, but only put into a deep sleep by the poison. But Juliet has changed in her sleep, has outgrown her old self and is no longer prepared to simply fulfil the role assigned to her. Romeo has to realise that he is no longer the leading actor in Juliet's life. Finally, Juliet is at a crossroads: should she return to her old life and continue the love story with Romeo? Or should she take a different path? She decides to break new ground and let go of her old life completely. The musical ends with a celebration of life and personal freedom that thrills the audience with a rousing soundtrack.

Chiara Fuhrmann takes on the role of Juliet, her first leading role in a musical. Hamburg musical theatre fans already know the graduate of Hamburg's Joop van den Ende Academy from Hamilton and Disney's DIE EISKÖNIGIN. With her soulful and very expressive voice, she delights the audience. She literally breathes new life into Julia with ease and skilfully manages to make the character's metamorphosis jump out at the audience.

Anne Hathaway, the wife inspired by Shakespeare, is played by Willemijn Verkaik. She is internationally known from plays such as WICKED and TARZAN.

Romeo, who is surprisingly back among the living, is played by Raphael Groß, who until recently played the role of Alfred in DANCE OF THE VAMPIRE.

Bram Tahamata plays May, a non-binary and extremely important character on Juliet's journey.

The soundtrack of & JULIET is full of energy and power and therefore fits perfectly with the modern and fresh production of & JULIET. The songs emphasise the metamorphosis of Juliet's new beginning and accompany her from a grieving girl looking for her place in the world to a power woman who knows what she wants and where she belongs.

All the songs were written or produced by Max Martin and once again demonstrate his talent for combining catchy melodies with emotional and powerful lyrics. The music is played live by a band at every show - so the dynamics of the songs remain fresh and tangible at every performance.
